Guide to Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America - Book
Written by Steve N.G. Howell and illustrated by Sophie Webb. 850 pages, 6x9, paperback, Oxford University Press. This is the book you need if you're going birding in Mexico or Central America. It covers the birds of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvadore, and part of Nicaraugua.

It describes all 1,070 species of birds found in the area. All but a few birds that are common in North America, such as house sparrow, have beautiful, big illustrations. There are 71 full color plates, some showing plumages never before illustrated.

The text is authoritative, with a detailed map showing the rang of every species. Species accounts describe appearance, voice, habitat, behavior, nests, eggs, and distribution. It also includes essential background for birding in the region.

It's a heavy book, so it's available only by standard shipping, which is US Priority Mail, unless you phone 800-779-7256 or email us to make special arrangements to pay the additional shipping over what the shopping cart shows.

Diane bought all the main field guides that cover Northern Central America. She likes this one way better than any of the others, because the illustrations are big enough and detailed enough to let you really see them and identify birds from them; because the range maps are actually usable to determine where each bird can be expected; and because it's just plain beautiful.
