Written by a Bill Thompson III, editor of Bird Watcher's Digest, this book was created with lots of input from his daughter Phoebe's school class. This book is not just for kids. It's at least partly by them.We at Bird Watching Dot Com have been asking the publishers to please put out a guide that is suitable for children. Now Houghton Mifflin has done it. And they've done it so well that we wish we'd had this book ourseves when we first got interested in birds.
It's not for small children, but for kids of maybe about eight years old, up through early teenage. A kid who can read fairly easily will be able to use this book. Yet it will not seem juvenile to a kid who is getting close to being grown up.
We think this field guide is uncannily right on for kids. Not with big gaudy pictures and a bitty-bit of information, but real knowledge about each bird. Where it lives. How to identify it. And special Wow! bursts, facts that Phoebe's class thought were the most interesting things about each bird.
There are color photos of the birds and nice drawings by Julie Zicafoose (Phoebe's mother) that show the birds' behavior.
The maps show where each bird lives, with a key to explain how to read the maps right there on the same page with the maps.
A fun touch is the special space to check off the birds as they are seen.
We highly recommend this book!
