Troyer Vertical Gourd - with Conley II Entrance and Wing Entrapment Guard is a great advance over earlier gourd designs for purple martin housing.

Gourd is 13" deep, which is recommended for bigger and healthier broods and higher survival rates. This style of nesting cavity produces more fledgelings per nest than the traditional houses square-built houses, because there is more room inside for the martin family. Also, the UV-protected Polyethylene material is better for martins than aluminum. It's warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Entrance It is not a mere hole, which predators and competitors could easily enter or reach in through. Instead it is starling-resistant entry rectangle, which leads to a tunnel about 3-1/2 inches long. The rectangular entrance is positioned quite low, just 1/8 inch above the inside bottom of the tunnel. This makes it very difficult for starlings to get in, because with their long legs, the starlings have to stoop way down low to even look in, and they find it difficult to creep low enough to get in.

Traction Inside the tunnel is a traction tread that provides friction on the floor of the tunnel, making it easy for the martins to get in and out.

Porches Martins love the extra-wide porches, which give them a landing platform and let the babies venture out tentatively until they're ready to fledge.

Wing Entrapment Guard protects purple martins against getting stuck in the entrance. That used to happen sometimes in spring when martins were competing for gourds. But this device, which comes installed in every Troyer Vertical Gourd, drastically reduces the danger of a bird getting a wing caught.

Pre-drilled holes accommodate the metal arms that support the gourds. (You can also hang the gourds from wires.)

Mini canopies
If you want to add ventilation to the gourd, you can drill 1/4 inch holes near the top of the gourds. There are mini canopies on the upper neck of the gourd. These make it easy to drill in the right spot and they help keep rain out. It's recommended that you plug the holes during spring, and open once the young are 7-10 days old.
